Potters Wood Methodist Church

Church Profile

We are a small Church, with only about 46 members. This means that we tend to behave as a large family, and support each other whenever possible.

There are several occasions during the year when this involves a get-together. At Christmas, we have a Candlelit Carol Service in which many of us participate. On the afternoon of Good Friday, we usually go for a ramble in the countryside; last year, the walk was along the canal towpath from Bradford-on-Avon to Avoncliff and back. On Spring bank holiday Monday we usually visit Portishead, play a game of cricket on the playing field, or just walk along the promenade and watch the ships coming and going from Avonmouth. Special events in the Autumn are the Harvest Festival and the Church Anniversary.

Of course, there are other special occasions such as Mothers’ Day, the Covenant service, Weddings and Baptisms, when most of us gather together. As with any Church with a wide age-range in our membership, it is inevitable that there are funerals, when we say goodbye to someone we have grown to love.

Since the purpose of our membership of this family is to strengthen our faith in Jesus our Lord, we meet together regularly to support each other in an act of worship. Sunday services are held at 11 am and 6 pm to do just that.

In the morning, the children of the Sunday School gather with the adults to share in the first part of the service. Then, after the second hymn, they depart to their classes. There is a separate building behind the Church for the Sunday School. This means that there one noisy group does not disturb the other.

At the moment, the Sunday School leaders are Neil & Karen Skuse, Gloria Selway, and Mavis Hancock, and any one of them will be happy to tell you more about the Sunday School activities. Please use the Contact form to make any enquiries.

We try to emphasise the happiness which comes naturally from the Christian way of life during our services. If you expect to follow a solemn ritual throughout the 60-minute period, then prepare to be disappointed.

The preachers have several microphones available to them, including radio microphones, so they are free to wander up and down the aisle if the mood takes them. We also have a large screen which allows transparencies to be displayed. So you don’t always need to use the hymn books.

As well as Sunday worship, we have regular sessions of Bible study during the week, when particular problems of interpretation can be aired and discussed.

On the lighter side, there is always the Monday Club. As its name implies, this meets on Mondays, between 2 pm and 4 pm. For more information on this club, please contact Liz Bray.

Some of our activities involve helping the less fortunate in this world. These include a couple of house-to-house envelope collections in aid of NCH Action for Children, and Christian Aid. Taking part in these collections is a useful exercise in strengthening our faith, as well as gathering much-needed funds.
